DOHA, March 27, 2018- Fresh from winning a gold at the Arab Indoor Rowing Championship in Kuwait, Qatar's rising star Tala Abu Jabara has now set her sights on winning a medal at the Asian Games to be held this summer in Indonesia.
Abdullah Al Sulaiti, President of Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF), yesterday welcomed the young athlete and applauded for her 'brilliant achievement' in Kuwait saying the Qatari rower would be aiming for more medals at the international level.
Tala said she is 'aiming to win a medal at the upcoming Asian Games in Jakarta'.
In a statement released yesterday, Tala said it was easy to aim for the medal but to realise the dream will require a lot of effort in the coming weeks and months.
The 25-year old said: “It would be amazing to win a gold at the Asian Games. It was a great honour to do well in Kuwait. The federation has given me great support. I will continue to bid for more glory."
“I had put in a great deal of effort in the event held in Kuwait. The hard work I put in helped me to win the medal despite tough competition from other contestants. Some leading athletes from the region were present in Kuwait," Tala said.
“I will continue to work hard," she added.
Tala said she is set to continue her training in France to improve her fitness levels.
“I have great ambitions to achieve more glory for my country," she said. “I want to supplement my medal by aiming for more in the future," she said.
Tala also won the gold medal at the 2016 GCC Rowing Championship and at the 12th Arab Rowing Championship held in Tunisia last year.
Al Sulaiti, President of QSRF, said: “Tala is a unique sporting talent. She possesses great set of skills that allow her to dominate the field of play. She needs more support and encouragement. We are confident that she will continue to improve and do well at the top level."
The QSRF chief expressed his happiness at the 'outstanding achievement of Tala', the first since the silver medal won by Qatar's Walid Alsharashani at the 2006 Asian Games.
Al Sulaiti said Tala's memorable achievement was the result of careful planning of the Qatar Olympic Committee (WOC) to back home-grown sporting talent in the country.
A total of eight countries featured in the 2000 paddling event in which Tala produced her personal record of 7.02.7 minutes to clinch gold medal. UAE's Amana Khalfan took silver medal in the contest.
