Qatar Olympic Committee announces busy schedule

Doha, April 1, 2018-The next nine months will be nothing short of a feast for sports fans as the state of Qatar is set to organise several mega tournaments including world, continental and regional championships, according to calendar details released yesterday.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has issued a list of 28 top competitions which will be hosted in different parts of Qatar until December 31, 2018.

This year's headline event will be the 48th World Gymnastics Championships which will feature almost all the current world and Olympic medallist from around the world.

The Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF), which has been organising the FIG Artistic World since 2007, will stage the competition from October 25 to November 3 at Aspire Academy.

Doha will stage another global competition when top swimmers will descend to their favourite destination and will compete for top honours at the FINA 2018 World Cup (September 13 to 15) at the Hamad Aquatics Complex.

Qatar, last month, also played host to FINA Marathon Swim World Series at Corniche. There will be a lot for football fans too. Apart from QFA-run annual competitions and the QSL, Qatar will also host the International Youth Football Championships from September 16 to 23.

Another anticipated contest to be staged here will be World Super League 2018 Handball Championship which is scheduled from October 16 to 19 at the Duhail Sports Hall. Doha, also known for hosting squash events for more than two decades, will welcome the stars of the sport for Qatar Classic from October 26 to November 2 at the Khalifa International Complex Squash.

Following the event will be International Open Beach Volleyball Tour (Qatar Open) in the cultural district Katara. Qatar will also host the World Junior Volleyball Championship, the schedule of which is yet to be announced.

This year's calendar also includes over a dozen of other international championships including the popular IAAF Diamond League, when Doha opens the season for top track and field stars in May (3 to 5) at the Qatar Sports Club Stadium.

There will be intriguing basketball action the following month as top players will be seen in action during the Doha International Basketball Championship, which will run from June 20 to 25 June at Al Gharafa Sports Club. Qatar, like every year, will also be hosting top equestrian tournaments including the Qatar International Showjumping Championships from November 29 to December 1, 2018.

Several other international and Asian events including weightlifting, ice hockey, rally and handball championships have also been lined up later this year.

The Qatari capital will also host a number of Gulf tournaments in 2018 including the Junior Athletics Championships from November 29 to December 1 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, the Gulf

Junior Handball Championship, and the 22nd Gulf Championship for U15 and U19.

The final of Emir's Cup football (May 19) will be among the most anticipated local events along with the finals of Emir's Cup Basketball Cup (April 21), the Qatar Cup (April 27), handball (April 30) and Emir's Cup Volleyball (May 11). The most important local events also include the Qatar Handball Cup final on April 19 and the Qatar Volleyball Cup final the following day.
