Qatar’s Samba storms to sixth straight victory

Lausanne, July 6, 2018-Qatar's 400 metres hurdles sensation Abderrahman Samba romped to his sixth straight Diamond League victory at the Stade de la Pontaise in Lausanne yesterday.

The Qatari remained unbeaten in the men's 400m hurdles this year, as he recorded yet another sub-48 clocking, to win in Lausanne in 47.42 seconds.

Norway's Karsten Warholm, the world champion, hurtled out of the blocks, but Samba ran smartly on his inside, moving up through the second bend and away down the straight for another win.

“I am happy with the race tonight. I went out stronger than usual in the first part of the race. So although it looked easy, the last 100m were tough as always. Your knees are going down and you have to fight on every step to maintain your speed," a delighted Samba said after his victory.

Samba has set his sights on breaking the long-standing world record. The 22-year-old had become only the second man to go under 47 seconds for the event at last week's race in Paris, where he clocked 46.98 seconds. It was just 0.20 off the world record set by Kevin Young of the United States in winning the 1992 Olympic title.

“I am happy with my fitness of the moment. I want to break the world record. It clearly is a goal for me in my career as an athlete. Now, whether it will happen this year or in the coming ones is hard to say and not really of major importance in the grand scheme of things. The objective of the season for me is the Asian Games which will take place towards the end of August," the Qatar phenomenon said.
