Dahlan al-Hamad re-elected President of Asian Athletics Association

Doha, April 21, 2019- The Asian Athletics Association will continue to operate under the leadership of President Dahlan Jumaan al-Hamad, following the 23rd congress which took place ahead of the Asian Athletic Championships.

Having been initially elected in 2013, al-Hamad has overseen significant growth in Asian Athletics, with more events and athletes competing in recent years with Championships being held in China and India, before the highly anticipated competition in Doha, Qatar, which gets underway this week.

The 2019 congress saw 48 elections confirmed across the board including eight Council Members who will offer support to the president throughout 2019 until 2023.

Speaking of his re-election as President, Dahlan Jumaan al-Hamad commented:

“Continuing to have the honour of leading Asian Athletics is something that I am extremely grateful for. Naturally this position is a one that attracts high interest from strong candidates, so to have the support and backing of the delegates is truly humbling.

“The hard work does not stop and with the rest of the Council and members, we will look at ways in which we can support athletes and federations to grow athletics and bring more impact and excitement to fans throughout the continent."

Members and councils were present for the Congress ahead of the 23rd Asian Athletic Championships which run between April 21-24 in the impressive Khalifa International Stadium, Doha, with new committees formed from the meeting.

The Asian Athletics Association President will be supported by his Senior Vice President and five Vice Presidents, along with three seats for Female Council Members, whilst committees are in place to ensure best practice for Technical, Women, Race Walking, Cross Country & Road Running, Coaching and Medical.
