Qatar beach volleyball team win Asian Championships

Maoming, China, May 13, 2019-Qatar's Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse defended their Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships title after overpowering Chinese top seeds Gao Peng and Li Yang 2-0 (21-13, 21-18) in the final on Sunday.

Top seeds Gao and Li were looking to end China's nine-year men's title drought in the Asian meet, but they had no reply to the power game of Qataris, who won in 33 minutes.

Eighth at the World Tour ranking, Tijan and Younousse, had captured the gold medal at the last year's Asian Games in Indonesia before taking bronze at the last month's FIVB World Tour 4-star in Xiamen, China and finishing fifth place at home in the FIVB World Tour 4-star in Doha in March. And they continued their strong run in Maoming, where they did not lose even a single set.

Tijan and Younousse will head to Hamburg next month for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Germany brimming with confidence.

In the third-place playoff, Chinese third seeds Wu Jiaxin and Ha Likejiang beat Aussies Cole Durant and Damien Schumann 2-0 (21-19 21-16).

Meanwhile, in the women's category, Chinese top seeds Wang Fan and Xia Xinyi found title-holders Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar from Australia an impossible nut to crack. The Chinese duo went down in hard-fought two-set thriller 2-0 (15-21, 30-32).

In the third-place playoff, Australians Phoebe Bell and Jessyka Ngauamo outclassed Vanuatu's Sherysyn Toko and Miller Pata 2-0 (21-15, 21-12).
