Barshim provides golden start to Qatar in Tehran

TEHRAN, February 2, 2018- Qatar's star high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim launched his new season with the gold medal in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran, Iran on Thursday.

The reigning world champion competed alone and went on to thrill the crowd, clearing 2.38m. The Qatari had a similar start to the last season when he won the Asian title in Saudi Arabia. Later, he finished unbeaten, winning the world gold medal and third Diamond League race in the process.

The second place went to local athlete Ghanbarzadeh, who was tied with Hamdi al Amin, Qatar's rising jumper who has been the 2016 World Youth Championship bronze medallist. Both were tied at 2.15m but the Qatari had to settle for the bronze medal on the countback.

In all, it was a good start for Qatar, who added a silver medal and a bronze medal to their kitty.

Yasser Salem grabbed the second place in the 3,000 m race with a timing of 8:38.02.

The other podium finisher for Qatar was Tosin Ogunode who won the bronze medal in the 60m, clocking 6.63.

The championships started on Thursday and will end on Saturday. In all about 360 athletes from 22 Asian countries are taking part. Qatar have entered 13 athletes from Qatar in seven events high jump, 60m, 400m, 800m, 1000m, 3000m and 4X400 relay.

This is the eighth edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships and the third time the event is been held in Iran's capital.
