FIBA Delegation Visits Qatar for 2027 Basketball World Cup Tip-Off Meeting

DOHA – A high-level FIBA delegation today began a two-day operational planning and inspection visit of the world-class venues that will host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar’s capital city of Doha.

The visiting delegation is headed by FIBA President Mr. Hamane Niang, and FIBA Secretary General Mr. Andreas Zagklis and includes a number of FIBA technical experts. 

On the first day, the delegation received updates on the Local Organizing Committee’s preparations to host this flagship basketball event. A comprehensive presentation was delivered on the sport venues, operations, transportation, accommodation, TV broadcasting services and other plans.

On this occasion, Mr. Mohammed Saad Almeghaiseeb, President of Qatar Basketball Federation, informed theFIBA officials that all managerial, technical and logistics preparations are  underway in Doha to host an amazing  FIBA Basketball World Cup  in 2027 and to  celebrate  a new chapter of achievements in sport.

Discussions were held on aligning on the vision for the event with an emphasis on collaboration between all stakeholders to ensure an inclusive World Cup that maximizes long-term legacy. Qatar also discussed its strategy for the development of the national team and mapping out the road to 2027 to capitalize on opportunities for engagement.

Tomorrow, the FIBA delegation will be taken on a tour of a number of Doha’s state-of-the-art venues which will be ready to host the world’s best players for competition and training in 2027. These venues include: Lusail Multipurpose Hall, Duhail Sports Hall, Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena, Aspire Academy and Qatar Basketball Federation Arena.

The State of Qatar was awarded the honour of hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 by the FIBA Central Board at its meeting in the Philippines capital, Manila on 28 April 2023. Qatar was selected based on the readiness of world-class competition venues, its commitment to sport as a platform for realizing national development goals and its enthusiasm to continue the development of basketball at all levels locally. Furthermore, Qatar’s celebrated portfolio of mega-sport event hosting gave FIBA the confidence to confirm the decision without hesitation.
