DOHA, June 1, 2018 - Khalifa al-Attiyah emerged as champion in the professional category of the second Nishan Championship at the Losail Shooting Range.
Al-Attiyah defeated Khalid al-Muhannadi to pocket the QR60,000 winner's prize money. Al-Muhannadi, who was beaten by Rashid Saleh Hamad last year, had to be satisfied with the runner-up spot and QR50,000.
Female participant Reem al-Sharshani walked away with the third place and QR40,000 in a thrilling finale. Saeed Abusharib was fourth and Abdulaziz al-Attiyah rounded out the top five.
Qatar Shooting and Archery Association president Ali Mohamed al-Kuwari and secretary-general Majid al-Naimi honoured the winners of the event, which saw more than 150 participants, including women.
The five-day event was held across five events in archery, rifle, pistol and shotgun shooting in the championship.
“The second edition of the Nishan Championship was very exciting. Last time, I won in the amateur category and this time, I was determined to do well among the professionals. I'm very delighted with my triumph in the class. I was confident of getting a good position but I never thought about winning this class as it is tough with so many strong participants around," al-Attiyah said.
“I want to thank all the participants for lifting the standard of the championship. Also I thank the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association for hosting it so smoothly and efficiently. I will try to defend the title next year," he said.
Ali al-Adba won the amateur class. He was also rewarded with QR60,000.
He got the better of the Salem al-Adba, who earned QR50,000. The podium was completed by Masoud al-Adbi, who received QR40,000.
Other winners in the amateur category were: Bader al-Marri (fourth), Abdulhadi al-Shahwan (fifth), Taleb al-Badi (sixth), Mustafa Yousef (seventh), Abdulhadi al-Hajri (eighth), Jaber al-Athba (ninth) and Taleb al-Manakhas (10th).
The QSAA also awarded the oldest participant, Salem al-Kuwari, and the youngest Nasser al-Kuwari. Newcomers Yasmin al-Sharshani and Jamila al-Dosari also received gifts.
“We're happy with the large turnout in the second edition. Another heartening factor was the presence of young shooters that we're looking for. We will try to encourage the newcomers so that they can be trained for the future," QSAA president al-Kuwari said.
