Qatar aim to make rugby history in Asia Women’s Rugby 7s

DOHA, August 8, 2019-Qatar women rugby team will participate in the Asia Seven's Trophy to begin in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 10.

The competition is expected to be quite tough as the winners will secure a spot in the elite sevens competition – the Asia Rugby Sevens Series.

“It is indeed a very proud moment for the federation. Three years ago, the women's rugby was started and we used the 'Get Into Rugby' (GIR) programme to push the sport. The federation also saw a lot of potential in players and tried to support them in every possible to grow it," said Chef de Mission Hamad Al Abdulla, who is a Board Member in the Qatar Rugby, Hockey and Cricket Federation.

He also added that the sport has grown big in Qatar in a relatively short time.

“The aim is to do well. We've been playing for some time now and we've been competing against some tough teams. For the Asian championship, we trained hard for two months at an indoor FIFA 2022 World Cup pitch provided by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy," added Hamad.
