DOHA, July 3, 2018 - Qatar's basketball team defeated their Iraqi counterparts 84-79 on Monday in the Group D match to qualify for the second round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
Qatar put in a strong performance in the game as Mansour Atif El Hadary netted scored 21 points and Trey Johnson scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists for the winners at the Al Gharafa sports hall in Doha yesterday.
The top three teams from each group climb to the second stage, which includes 12 teams, divided into two groups, each with six teams.
Three teams from each group in the second stage will qualify, directly to the 2019 World Cup in China as well as the best in fourth place. Asia secured seven seats in the World Cup in the next qualifying round through qualifications, especially as China has qualified as the host country of the global competition.
