Sergey Bida wins Qatar Fencing Grand Prix 2020

Doha, January 27, 2020- Russia's Sergey Bida claimed the title of Qatar Fencing Grand Prix 2020 organized by the Qatar Weightlifting and Fencing Federation at Aspire Dome.

The final day of the tournament was attended by HE the QOC Secretary General Jassim bin Rashed Al Buenain, Director of the QOC Sport Affairs Department Khaleel Al Jabir and President of the Qatar Weightlifting and Fencing Federation Mohammad Yousef Al Mana.

In men's final, Russia's Sergey Bida fought off his opponent, Alexandre Bardenet of France, in order to get his hands on a gold medal.

Italy's Andrea Santarelli and Japan's Masaru Yamada claimed the bronze medals.

Ana Maria Popescu of Romania took gold medal in the women's final after defeating Italy's Mara Navarria.

The three-day event brought together 494 male and female fencers from 45 nations. The final day saw Olympic hopefuls compete from the Round of 64 through to the Final, hoping to gain enough points to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Fencing Grand Prix will continue in Budapest, Hungary on the 6th of March before continuing on to Cali, Colombia in May, giving athletes two more opportunities to secure their ticket to Tokyo.
