Sheikh Joaan attends Olympic Refuge Foundation board meeting
Buenos Aires, October 11, 2018- HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee attended the Olympic Refuge Foundation Board meeting held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was attended the board members of the foundation including Mr. Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner of UNHCR, Mr. Zaiqing Yu, IOC Vice-President, Dr. Chungwon Choue, President of the World Taekwondo Federation and Mr. Yiech Pur Biel, member of the first Refugee Olympic Team at the Olympic Games Rio 2016.
The meeting discussed the sport for protection projects to be implemented in communities and camps affected by the refugee crisis across the world.
The IOC created the Olympic Refuge Foundation in 2017 to support the protection and empowerment of vulnerable displaced people through sport and through the creation of safe spaces, partnering with UNHCR and local implementation partners in the field. The Qatar Olympic Committee was confirmed as a founding donating partner.
On the other hand, HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, the QOC President met with Mr. Neven Ilic Alvarez, President of the Pan American Sports Organization on the sidelines of the Youth Olympic Games.
The meeting reviewed the areas of cooperation between the two organizations and the means of developing them in the future.
