Team Qatar enjoys success throughout Asian athletics championships

Doha, April 25, 2019-Team Qatar claimed six medals throughout the Asian Athletics Championships, with the home nation exciting throughout the competition.

The closing day of the championships was attended by HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Welcoming 41 other nations to Doha, the competition was tough across all disciplines with numerous Championships records being broken each day.

Athletics fans in Qatar and throughout Asia witnessed successes with Men's 400m Hurdles star Abderrahman Samba winning Qatar's first gold with an impressive performance, before a second gold was added, thanks to Abubaker Haydar Abdalla's victory in the Men's 800m, whilst fellow countryman Jamal Hairane claimed bronze.

The final day of the Championships also saw Ashraf El Seify win silver in the Men's Hammer Throw whilst Musaab Ali won bronze in the Men's 1500m and the Men's 400x4 Relay Team also won a bronze medal as the Championships came to a close.

Speaking after his success in the Men's 800m, Abubaker Haydar Abdalla commented:

“Winning gold is an incredible feeling, but to do it in Doha, in this fantastic stadium is extra special.

“Having the rest of Team Qatar supporting each other throughout training and the Championships is very important and makes a such a big difference. I'm delighted to celebrate this victory with everybody in Doha."

The 23rd Asian Athletics Championships drew to a close at the Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday evening after 129 medals were awarded throughout the four-days, in a successful event that leads to the excitement of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 which gets underway 27 September.
