In 1900 and 1904, football was introduced as an exhibition sport and became the first team sport included in the Olympic Games. Since 1908, the sport has been held at every Olympic Games with the exception of the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Women’s football debuted in the Atlanta ’96 Games.
While professionals are allowed in the men’s tournament, rules restrict teams to players under 23 years old, with the exception of three over-age players. No age restrictions apply for the women’s tournament.
Team Qatar have qualified for the Olympic Games in both the Los Angeles ’84 Games and the Barcelona ’92 Games, where they made it to the quarter finals. The team’s best-ever result came in the Doha 2006 Asian Games where they claimed the gold medal in front of a home crowd!
Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and will become the first Middle Eastern nation in history to host the world’s second biggest sports event.
