Sheikh Joaan Honored with Breakthrough Award at ANOC Awards 2021
The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was honored with the Breakthrough Award by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) during the ANOC Awards 2021 ceremony, held alongside the ANOC General Assembly in Crete, Greece.
H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the QOC, received the award, which recognizes National Olympic Committees (NOCs) that secured their first-ever Olympic medal or gold medal.
Qatar made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning two gold medals—Fares Ibrahim in the men's 96kg weightlifting category and Mutaz Barshim in the men's high jump. In addition, Qatar’s beach volleyball team earned the Arab world’s first Olympic medal in a team sport.
