Sailing

sailing

Sailing is the art of navigating a boat using wind power. It demands a high level of skill and adaptability, as sailors must constantly adjust to shifting weather and water conditions. The sport made its Olympic debut at the Paris 1900 Games, and since then, the types of boats used have evolved alongside advancements in yacht design and sailing technology. In recent decades, innovation has led to lighter, faster vessels, placing increasing physical and technical demands on athletes.

Today’s Olympic sailing events feature a combination of long-established boat classes and newer, more cutting-edge designs that reflect the modern evolution of the sport. The programme continues to adapt over time, ensuring a balance between tradition and innovation.

At Paris 2024, men competed in the iQFoil, Formula Kite, ILCA 7, and 49er classes, while women raced in the iQFoil, Formula Kite, ILCA 6, and 49er FX classes. Additionally, mixed-gender events were held in the 470 and Nacra 17 classes, showcasing teamwork and versatility.

Qatar Sailing & Rowing Federation

Established in 2001, the Qatar Sailing & Rowing Federation is the official body responsible for the development and governance of sailing and rowing in the country. Operating under the Qatar Olympic Committee, the federation oversees national teams, organizes local competitions, and manages technical training in collaboration with the international and Asian federations.

The federation focuses on expanding participation, especially among youth, through dedicated training centers and its sailing academy, which offers structured programs in Optimist sailing and both single and double scull rowing. Women’s participation is a key priority, and Qatar made history when Tala Abujbara became the country’s first Olympic rower, representing Qatar at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She continues to compete in regional and international events. In sailing, Khalid Al-Mohannadi has emerged as one of the leading athletes, alongside a new generation of promising talent in both disciplines.

On the hosting front, the federation organizes major regional and international events, including the Qatar International Open Sailing Championship, the GCC Sailing & Rowing Championships, and the annual Katara Cup — all of which reinforce Qatar’s status as a regional hub for maritime sports.
