The State of Qatar has been awarded the honour of hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. This was announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) at its Central Board meeting held today in the Philippines capital, Manila.
The Central Board’s unanimous decision in favour of Qatar was announced after a thorough evaluation of Qatar’s Candidature File and Final Presentation. The Qatar 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Bid Committee (Qatar 2027) presented a compelling vision, concept, and narrative for the event, which will be held in the Middle East and North Africa region for the very first time.
FIBA highlighted several reasons which prompted the Central Board Members to vote in favour of the Qatari File. This includes, but is not limited to, the readiness of world-class competition venues, its commitment to sport as a platform for realizing national development goals and its enthusiasm to continue the development of basketball at all levels locally. Furthermore, Qatar’s celebrated portfolio of mega-sport event hosting gave FIBA the confidence to confirm the decision without hesitation.
Qatar 2027’s commitment to long-term legacy planning and its focus on sustainability was further testament to the event’s value and impact potential on growing the sport of basketball in the region and around the world. Qatar’s File outlined how it will set new benchmarks in both areas to build on the country’s past achievements whilst investing in the continued development of local capacity for exceptional delivery of sporting events.
Mohammed Saad Al-Mughaiseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Association and CEO of Qatar 2027, added: “I would like to personally thank FIBA’s Executive Leadership for their close cooperation and support throughout this journey. We are grateful for the opportunity to present our Bid to the FIBA Central Board and sincerely thank them for their trust. We are very excited about this new chapter in our partnership, which will no doubt help us realize our shared goals. Today we celebrate this great achievement in the history of Qatari basketball and the Qatar Basketball Association. In the past decades, we have seen exponential growth of basketball in the State of Qatar and in the region, and we are excited to show the whole world how the World Cup can inspire future generations to embrace and follow the sport. We cannot wait to welcome players, fans and the entire FIBA Family to Qatar in 2027 for what will be an incredible and historic celebration of Basketball.”
