The QOC

Established in 1979, and proudly recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1980, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) stands as a beacon of excellence, innovation and inspiration within the Olympic Movement. Headquartered in Doha, the QOC plays a crucial role as Qatar’s National Olympic Committee in fostering and promoting the Olympic values and physical activity throughout Qatar, and empowering Team Qatar to achieve excellence on the global stage.

Collaborating closely with our 23 National Federations, we provide unwavering support to athletes, coaches and officials across all levels of the sporting pathway. From grassroots development to international competitions, we are dedicated to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of sporting success.

History of Qatar in the Olympic Movement

Qatar's rich sporting heritage traces back to the founding of the State of Qatar, deeply rooted in traditional sports and games that have shaped our cultural identity. Over the years, we have evolved into one of the world’s leading international sports hubs.

From the construction of sports facilities in the 1940s, to the iconic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums, our nation's journey in the Olympic Movement has been one of transformation and excellence. Today, Qatar continues to proudly host major sports events, strengthening our reputation as a world-class host and premier destination for international sport. At the same time, we support the development of Team Qatar’s incredible athletes to reach their full potential as they compete at elite international levels.

Team Qatar’s Olympic Glory

Qatar claimed its first-ever Olympic medal when MohamedSuleiman won bronze in the men’s 1,500m at Barcelona 1992. Since then, Team Qatar has reached even greater heights on the world stage. At Tokyo 2020, weightlifter Fares El Bakh secured the nation’s first Olympic gold in the men’s 96kg category. That same Games, Olympic history was made when Mutaz Essa Barshim, Qatar’s most decorated Olympian, shared gold in the men’s high jump with Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi.

The QOC is dedicated to serving its athletes, igniting dreams and celebrating their journeys of perseverance, hard work and triumph. Our athletes have etched their names in sporting record books, playing key roles in the development of the Olympic Movement in Qatar and inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.

Partner of the Olympic Movement

Beyond success on the field of play, Qatar has established itself as a trusted partner of the Olympic Movement and International Federations. We have built an unparalleled legacy of world-class hosting, hospitality and organisational excellence. This commitment has been demonstrated time and again as we continue to welcome the world for major international sports event.

The Doha 2006 Asian Games was a pivotal moment and landmark event that significantly enhanced our capabilities and reputation as a premier sports destination. Since then, Qatar has hosted several of the world’s biggest sporting events, including the 2019 World Athletics Championships, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, among many others.

Qatar's sporting journey is far from over. We are preparing to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027 and the Asian Games in 2030, bringing the spirit of "The Games of Your Life" back to Doha for a second time. These events will mark a new era shaped by the transformative power of sport, reinforcing Qatar's position as a hub for major international sporting events.
