HYDERABAD, India, December 1, 2017 - Al Najma made history when they won the 20th Asian Handball Clubs League Championship by defeating Al Duhail of Qatar 21-16 in the final held in Hyderabad, India, on Thursday.
Al Najma became the first Bahraini team to win an Asian handball championship, thereby qualifying for the World Handball Clubs League Championship to be held in Doha next year.
Al Najma were shaky in the first eight minutes of the game, when Al Duhail led 5-1. However, Al Najma's coach Bin Masoud made some substitutions which helped the team to draw level 5-5, and both team drew 9-9 by the end of the first half.
The teams continued their excellent performance in the second half and were 16-16 at one stage. Al Najma went all out for victory in the last four minutes, with both Ahmed Hamasa and Hussain Al Sayyad scoring a number of goals and goalkeeper Mohammed Abdulhussain making some fine saves.
